Joyce Banda was the President of Malawi from 2012 to 2014. She is the founder and the\u00a0leader of the People\u2019s Party created in 2011.\u00a0She became president following the sudden death of President Bingu wa Mytharika, and\u00a0became Malawi\u2019s fourth president and the first female president. She was also the second\u00a0president in Africa.<\/p>\n
Banda entered politics in 2004 as a member of Malawi\u2019s parliament. In 2009, she\u00a0became the nation\u2019s first female vice president. Women\u2019s health, education, economic\u00a0empowerment, and getting women into leadership roles are the cornerstones of her\u00a0agenda and what she considers the keys to Malawi\u2019s success.<\/p>\n
She entered in politics in 2004 as a member of Malawi\u2019s parliament. In 2009 she became\u00a0the first nation\u2019s female vice-president and had served in various roles as Minister of\u00a0Gender and Child Welfare and as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
\nShe was born in 1950 in Malawi and obtained a bachelor\u2019s degree from the Atlantic\u00a0International University, an online university based in the US.\u00a0Before her active career in politics she founded and directed various business and\u00a0organizations, including the National Association of Business Women (NABW), Young\u00a0Women Leaders Network and the Hunger Project and the Joyce Banda Foundation, an\u00a0organization dedicated to rural development and improving the lives of women and
\nchildren.\u00a0On the international scene, President Dr. Banda was instrumental in the formation\u00a0of the African Federation of Women Entrepreneurs (AFWE), currently running in 41\u00a0countries in Africa; the Council for the Economic Empowerment of Women in Africa\u00a0(CEEWA); and the American & African Business Women\u2019s Alliance (AABWA), of which she served as First President.\u00a0In June 2014 Forbes quoted President Banda as the 40 th most powerful woman in the world and the most powerful woman in Africa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
